Last week it rained really hard and we had a lightening/thunderstorm. We had my parents over to BBQ some hamburgers and we were watching it rain. My mom looked out the window just in time to see lightening hit a house down the street and soon enough the power went out. Being the unprepared couple we are we only had a couple flashlights on hand. So we all sat on the back porch with blankets and watched as it poured and listened to the thunder got louder and louder.
We sat talking about what we used to do when the power went out when we were younger. My parents were very prepared for things like this. We would always get the oil lamps from the basement and light them. Then we'd get a backpack out of the closet full of MREs (meals ready to eat) and sit by the fire and eat. I think they were teaching us to be prepared for disasters and other problems like these. It was fun and I will always remember it and pass along the tradition with my kids :)
After we sat out for hours my parents decided to walk home in the dark and when they went out front they realized the power was only out at my house and a few houses up the street. So we could have had power at their house the whole time....oh well, it was fun to sit and reminisce :)
